The Mission Committee is responsible for choosing the programs and organizations we help support annually. They are chosen based on the core values and beliefs of the church.
The Al Amana Centre in Muscat, Oman, is an ecumenical and interfaith organization built upon the legacy of over 130 years of Christians working with their Muslim hosts and neighbors from different faiths represented in Oman. We live in a global age in which one act, whether it is political, economic, religious, or cultural, can have a worldwide impact. Our futures are now interconnected, and it will take the cooperation of all segments of society to live in harmony with one another bringing Christians and Muslims together. Their mission is to provide safe spaces, diverse encounters, and engaging methodologies for people of faith to build sustainable peace.
The Centre has expanded its work in recent years to provide a safe place for leaders of different faiths in conflict-torn countries beyond Oman and the Middle East (Muslim and Christian leaders as well as college students in the Asian sub-continent and in Africa) to meet and seek ways to work together for peaceful reconciliation around the values of mutual understanding and trust. During COVID-19, the Centre carried out much of its mission via ZOOM and other electronic means. The Centre’s “semester abroad” program as well as short-term immersion visits were suspended in 2020. Short-term trips have now been resumed. The “semester abroad” program may resume in 2023.
The Centre is registered in the Sultanate of Oman as a “non-governmental agency” (NGO). The Centre is governed by an international ecumenical and interfaith elected Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has full authority for the vision/mission and program of the Centre. The mission/program budget is supported largely by participant or agency fees and grants. Financial support also comes from US and Canadian churches (Reformed, Presbyterian, Episcopal, UCC and Methodist congregations). Thanks to our generous donors. our congregation contributes annually to the Al Amana Centre. In 2018, a group travelled there to learn more about the program and the executive director visited our congregation in 2019. Members, Rev. Ken and Marcia Bradsell spent two years in the Sultanate of Oman, where Ken served the congregations of the Protestant Church as its lead pastor and served as liaison for all Protestant and Orthodox ministries in Oman with the country’s Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The Boothbay Region District Nursing Association was ounded in January 1952, the Boothbay Region District Nursing Association's mission has always been to provide RN support to residents of the region allowing them to safely remain in their homes and age in place. An RN collaborates with a patient's PCP to determine their needs and plan of care. Physicians recognize that all needs of their patients cannot be met through insurance coverage and additional help is necessary. Services such as medication management, wellness checks, chronic disease management, patient education, and referrals to other community resources are generally not covered by insurance, Maine Care, or Medicare. These services are provided without discrimination and regardless of financial status. The church supports this group's mission with an annual donation, this support would not be possible without our generous parishioners.
The Boothbay Region Food Pantry started in 1985 as an ecumenical committee of church ministers and leaders in the Boothbay region. The pantry serves individuals and families experiencing food insecurity with non-perishable items and fresh produce. Non-perishable items are largely obtained by donations and church appeals along with contributions from Hannaford Super Markets, Good Shepherd Food Bank, local schools, and the YMCA. Veggies to Table, Twin Village Farm, Hannaford, and other local farmers provide significant amounts of in-season fresh produce all year long. Clients are also given vouchers to be used at their local market to purchase perishable items such as milk, eggs, and bread.
The Congregational Church provides a "home" for the pantry in the lower level of the church to store food. This space was newly renovated 6 years ago to provide more space for shelving, refrigeration, and commercial freezers. The pantry opens up the Fellowship Hall at the church every Friday from 11 AM-1 PM to the community where they make available an impressive selection of foods. Volunteers works tirelessly every day of the week picking up food at various places and stocking the shelves. It is quite an effort and one we are proud to support through donations, Souper Bowl for Caring, and a space for them to grow. Check them out on Facebook or visit their website to learn more about the ways the Boothbay Region Food Pantry serves our community.

Safe Passage in Guatemala City serves the community surrounding the largest garbage dump in Central America. This organization, started by Hanley Denning in December of 1999, is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty through education, healthcare, nutrition, and social services for children Pre-K through 9th grade and their families, as well as educational reinforcement for high school students.
The odds are stacked against the families of this community as one out of every three residents have never been to school, most adults have less than a fourth grade education, the average family size of six lives on just $4 a day, and their public schools are only open for 4 hours a day. “Safe Passage is a refuge for children facing difficult situations marked by extreme poverty, neglect, and abuse. Safe Passage is a gateway out of poverty.”
We are proud to support this organization through an annual donation from our Board of Missions. We also sponsor a student every year through donations from the congregation. We have already seen one student through the program who has graduated and have picked up a new student who started Pre-K 2 years ago. In May of 2018 we sent a group of youth leaders to the school in Guatemala to volunteer. They were able to meet the young man we sponsored through the program and help teach English to students. They got to experience firsthand the impact this program has on the lives of the garbage dump community.
The St. Andrews Free Bed Fund is a non-profit was established in 1938 by a group of local community members spearheaded by Dr. George Gregory, Harold Bishop, and Fannie Orne Perkins. The initial mission was to be able to provide patients residing in Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport and Edgecomb with no health insurance or very high deductibles a bed at St. Andrews Hospital at no cost at the request of a doctor.
With the development of HIPPA laws and the closing of our beloved local hospital, the mission of the group needed to pivot to continue to meet the needs of those they served. Now you can apply for financial assistance through the organization who is affiliated with other hospitals and health services on the mid-coast, like Mid Coast Hospital, Miles Memorial Hospital, Boothbay Regional Ambulance Service and Boothbay Region Health Center.
We are proud to support this organization each year with a donation knowing it is helping our community receive the healthcare we all deserve.

"The Apprenticeship is a unique opportunity for adults of all ages to take a deliberate time of reflection and skill-building as they search for new direction in their lives. Through daily work in the woodshop, reflection, and living out service to others at home and in the community, we learn about ourselves and each other. The skills we practice range from the technical, to self-awareness, to interpersonal, as we navigate the joys and challenges of living and working closely with others."
